Lower circulation numbers result in less income, which results in staff cuts, which accelerates the spiral toward failure.īut i t is not all g loom and doom for newspapers, nor should it be. As the product weakens, fewer readers see the value in receiving a daily newspaper, which resu lts in lower circulation. That one-two punch has forced newspapers to cut staff, which results in a less robust product. Unfortunately, since the mid-1990s, circulation has been slipping and advertisers have fled for the Internet -a sea change that has left newspapers nationwide struggling to survive. When those two missions conflicted, the newspapers more often than not came down on the side of their responsibility to report. Both newspapers were staffed by hard-nosed reporters and management b alanced two missions: making a profit with civic responsibility. I develope d my ideas of what a metropolit an newspaper should be during the 1970s, even before I started at the Detroit Free Press as a copy clerk at age 19.ĭuring that time, The Detroit News and Free Press were at each o ther’s throats-the Free Press seeking to become the dominant paper in Michigan and The News doing everything it could to maintain its circulation lead.
